I live in NC, planting zone 8a (formerly 7b), where I've been battling invasive honeysuckle in my yard for two years. In efforts to make use of the endless amount of vines pulled instead of just chucking them in the eff-it-bucket, I've decided to get a little creative and transform it into a gorgeous holiday wreath!

The holiday season is a time for joy, festivity, and creativity! If you’re looking for a fun and eco-friendly project to brighten your home this Christmas, why not craft your very own Christmas wreath? This tutorial will guide you through creating a beautiful wreath using invasive honeysuckle vine, fragrant rosemary, and cheerful holly berries. Not only will you have a stunning decoration to showcase, but you'll also be making an environmentally conscious choice since all materials are 100% compostable! So grab your gardening gloves and let’s get started!

Materials Needed

  • Honeysuckle Vine (or alternatives like grapevine or willow)

  • Rosemary Cuttings

  • Holly Berries

  • Jute Twine, Waxed Cotton, Baker's Twine, or Natural Raffia

  • Scissors or Pruning Shears

  • Wire Cutters (if needed)

  • Optional: Additional Greenery (such as cedar or pine)

Step-by-Step
Wreath Creation

Step 1: Prepare the Honeysuckle Vine Base

  1. Create the Wreath Form: Take one length of vine and bend it into a circular shape. Secure the ends together by twisting them around each other.

  2. Weave Additional Vines: Continue adding more pieces of vine to thicken your base. Weave each new piece into the circle by tucking it through the existing structure and wrapping it around tightly.

  3. Secure the Base: Once you reach your desired thickness (about 2-3 inches), use your chosen twine (jute twine, waxed cotton, baker's twine, or raffia) to tie off sections of the wreath at different points to keep everything secure.

  1. Gather Your Vines: Start by collecting enough honeysuckle vine to create a base for your wreath. Aim for about 10 pieces of vine that are approximately 3-4 feet long each.

Step 2: Prepare Your Decorative Cuttings

  1. Harvest Rosemary and Holly: For this project, I used 21 bundles of rosemary, each containing four 6-inch cuttings. I also included three 3-inch pieces of holly in the middle and two 3-inch pieces of rosemary on the inside of the circle as I wrapped them around the honeysuckle base along with one bundle of Rosemary.

  2. Bundle the Cuttings: Group several rosemary sprigs (I used 4 per bundle) together and tie them with your chosen twine. Do the same with holly branches.

Step 3: Assemble Your Wreath

  1. Attach Rosemary Bundles: Begin attaching your rosemary bundles to the honeysuckle base by tucking them into the vines and securing them with twine.

  1. Add Holly Berries: Next, place the holly bundles around the wreath, ensuring they are evenly distributed for a balanced look. Secure them in place with twine.

  2. Final Adjustments: Once all elements are attached, take a step back and adjust any pieces that may need repositioning for an even appearance.
